Early Life and Family Background
Oburu Ng’ong’a Oginga, popularly known as Oburu Odinga, was born on 15 October 1943 in Nyanza Province, Kenya. He is a prominent member of the Odinga political family, which has played a significant role in Kenya’s political history. His father, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, was a key figure in Kenya’s independence movement, and his younger brother, Raila Odinga, was one of the country’s most influential opposition leaders. Oburu also has a sister, Ruth Odinga.
Growing up, Oburu experienced financial challenges, including property auctions, as highlighted in his autobiography, In the Shadow of My Father. Despite these hurdles, his family instilled in him the values of discipline and public service.
Education
Oburu pursued higher education in the Soviet Union at the People’s Friendship University in Moscow. He earned:

Early Career
Upon returning to Kenya, Oburu worked as an economist at the Ministry of Planning & National Development from 1981 to 1994. He also served as a councillor in Kisumu Municipality between 1974 and 1979 and held management positions in the private sector, including as a general manager for a transport company.
Political Career
Member of Parliament (MP)
- Elected MP for Bondo Constituency in 1994, a seat once held by his father.
- Served as MP until 2013, later becoming a nominated MP from 2013 to 2017.
Assistant Minister for Finance
