Who Owned Tuskys Supermarkets and What Happened to Them?

For many years, Tuskys Supermarkets was a household name in Kenya. From Nairobi to smaller towns across the country, the blue-and-white branding was familiar to millions of shoppers. Furthermore, it stood alongside giants like Nakumatt and Uchumi Supermarkets, competing fiercely in a rapidly expanding retail space.

But today, Tuskys is no longer operating. Its branches are shut, shelves empty, and employees long gone. So who owned Tuskys, and what really led to its collapse?

Letโ€™s break it down.

Who Owned Tuskys Supermarkets?

Tuskys Supermarkets was owned by members of the Tusker Mattresses Limited family business, founded by the late Joram Kamau.

After his death in 2010, ownership and control of the business remained within his family. The key figures involved included:

  • Dan Githua โ€“ Son of Joram Kamau
  • Wanjiru Kamau โ€“ Daughter of Joram Kamau
  • Other close family members who held directorship and management roles

Unlike some supermarket chains that are publicly listed, Tuskys was a privately owned family business. That structure gave the family significant control but also meant that internal disagreements could directly affect operations.

And unfortunately, that is exactly what happened.

The Rise of Tuskys

Tuskys began as a small family shop before expanding aggressively across Kenya. At its peak:

  • It had over 60 branches nationwide
  • Employed thousands of Kenyans
  • Generated billions in annual revenue
  • Became one of Kenyaโ€™s top three supermarket chains

After the fall of Nakumatt, Tuskys briefly positioned itself to capture a larger market share. Many Kenyans believed it would learn from Nakumattโ€™s mistakes.

However, the warning signs were already there.

What Happened to Tuskys?

Tuskys did not collapse overnight. The downfall was gradual, painful, and very public.

1. Internal Family Disputes

After the death of founder Joram Kamau, disagreements among family members began surfacing. There were disputes over:

  • Company leadership
  • Financial management
  • Strategic direction
  • Control of assets

These disputes created instability at the top level. When leadership is divided, decision-making slows down, and businesses suffer.

2. Massive Debt and Supplier Issues

Tuskys began accumulating huge debts owed to suppliers. Many suppliers stopped delivering goods due to unpaid bills.

As a result:

  • Shelves became empty
  • Customers lost confidence
  • Sales declined sharply

Once customers walk into a supermarket and consistently find empty shelves, trust disappears quickly.

3. Employee Salary Delays

Staff began complaining about delayed salaries and unpaid statutory deductions such as NHIF and NSSF.

This led to employee strikes, public protests, and negative media coverage

When employees lose morale, service quality drops. That further damages the brand.

4. Management Crisis

At one point, the family members publicly accused each other of mismanagement. Consequently, court cases followed. Directors were removed and replaced. There were claims of financial misappropriation.

The situation became chaotic.

Instead of focusing on recovery and restructuring, leadership was busy fighting internally.

5. Closure of Branches

By 2020, Tuskys began shutting down branches one by one. The COVID-19 pandemic worsened an already fragile situation.

Eventually:

  • Most branches were auctioned
  • Assets were seized
  • Operations completely stopped

Tuskys officially collapsed under mounting debt estimated in billions of shillings.

Could Tuskys Have Been Saved?

Many business analysts believe Tuskys might have survived if:

  • The family resolved leadership disputes early
  • Professional managers were brought in
  • Debt restructuring was done sooner
  • Transparency improved

Kenya had already witnessed the dramatic collapse of Nakumatt. The lessons were clear: uncontrolled expansion, debt accumulation, and weak governance can destroy even the biggest retail brands.

Unfortunately, Tuskys repeated many of the same mistakes.
