Suicide Gone Wrong: How a Gen-Z Set Himself on Fire Only to Die the Long, Hard Way

When Jeremiah was thinking of ending his life, he expected it to be less painful and faster. However, what was expected to take few minutes turned to a devastating death days later. A story of anger turned to family horror, anguish, death, and loss of property.

Jeremiah, a young Gen-z

Jeremiah Murithi, is a young Gen-Z from a village called Nguguni, Mbeere South, Embu County. He was born in a family of four and is the third born and first son. Jeremiah is very fresh in the 20s and was getting his life together. After completing form four, Jeremiah was not interested in higher learning. He instead ventured into agriculture.

After noticing the farming interest, his father showed him a piece of land where he started farming. Jeremiah became a successful farmer. He later built a simple house on the same land. In other words, he had secured a land for him and future generation.

Jeremiah’s Suicide Mission

The news that his father had sold the piece of land where he was farming and living recently shocked the young Gen-Z. The news did not sit well with the son because he expected that at least his father would tell him before taking such a life-changing step. Besides beginning his life on that piece of land, Jeremiah expected his father to explain his plans to sell it, as the culture requires. Having skipped the notification part, the father went on to sell the land.

According to his older sister, Jeremiah had casually mentioned that he would do something crazy as a blow back. Jeremiah was clearly upset and felt that his rights was being taken away. On the fateful day, Jeremiah was quarreling with his parents when they moved to their house, leaving the Gen-z outside the house.

Jeremiah’s father has a small family car, a probox model. At the time of this event, the car is parked outside their main house, just within the compound. When Jeremiah thought of ending his life, he combined it with attacking his father’s car. Therefore, Jeremiah entered his father’s probox, took some petrol and poured it on himself while in the car, moments before setting himself on fire.

While burning in the car, Jeremiah could not tolerate the pain from the burns. So he ran out of the car and screamed. The screaming noise caught his parents’ attention. The parents and neighbours rescued him and put out the fire. The neighbours took him to the hospital. Their first stop at Medical, a hospital in Kiritiri, did not last long as they were sent to Embu Level 5 hospital.

Jeremiah attempted suicide on night of 4th September 2025. He stayed in the hospital while fighting for his life, or rather, the stakeholders were trying to save his life, until the evening of 8th September, when he gave up. He died before 7 pm.

Food For Thought

Suicide is a major factor in mental illnesses. Mental health is a growing issue amongst the young generation yet little is happening to compact it. Our parents do not understand the importance of checking on our mental health statuses. Although mental illness is a serious condition affecting many people, suicide is not the solution. Taking one’s life has never been an achievement and will never be. Therefore, I call upon all people to seek help when experiencing suicidal thoughts. Sharing what is one’s mind eases the burden of stress.
